Claude Projects and Claude Memory are not the same thing — and neither maps cleanly to ChatGPT Memory. Here is an accurate three-way comparison.

Claude global Memory is one cross-chat synthesis layer for standalone conversations. Claude Projects are isolated workspaces with their own knowledge base and separate project memory. ChatGPT Memory is a rolling synthesis across chats, with optional project-only isolation in Projects.

Claude global Memory
Claude's global Memory synthesizes standalone chats — not project chats. It updates on a roughly 24-hour cycle. Available to all users including free. Manage it under Settings → Capabilities → Memory.
You can view and edit the synthesis, or ask Claude to update specific facts in chat. Memory focuses on work-related context: role, projects, communication preferences, technical preferences.
Claude Projects
Projects are self-contained workspaces. Each has a project knowledge base (uploaded documents + project instructions) and a separate project memory that does not read global memory. Projects do not share memory with each other. Free users can create up to five projects.
Anthropic documents that context is not shared across chats within a project unless information is added to the project knowledge base. Projects excel at client work, document RAG, and team collaboration — not at carrying your personal biography into every new standalone chat.
ChatGPT Memory
ChatGPT's 2026 memory system maintains a Memory Summaryauto-updated from chats, files, and connected apps via OpenAI's Dreaming synthesis. You can edit the summary, but it does not show everything ChatGPT remembers.
ChatGPT Projects support project-only memory at creation — context isolated to that project. Project instructions override global Custom Instructions inside the project. Shared projects automatically use project-only memory.

Gemini (brief)
