Gemini Import Memory: How It Works (and Its Limits)

What Gemini memory import is (and isn't)

In March 2026, Google launched tools to help users switch to Gemini by importing memories and full chat historyfrom other AI apps. This is a one-time migration into Google's memory store — not ongoing cross-platform sync, and not a portable file you control outside Gemini.

Import is separate from Gemini's native memory, which learns from your past Gemini chats when Keep Activity is on and you are 18+ with a personal Google account.

How to import memories step-by-step

1. Visit gemini.google.com.
2. Open Settings & help → Import memory to Gemini.
3. Copy the prompt Google provides.
4. Paste that prompt into your current AI platform (ChatGPT, Claude, etc.).
5. Copy that platform's memory summary response.
6. Return to Gemini, paste into the designated field, and click Add memory.

Gemini creates a new chat thread and integrates the content for future conversations. Quality depends on what the source AI summarizes — you are importing a summary, not a verbatim export of your authored context.

How to import chat history

For full chat exports, download a .zip from your source platform and upload it in Gemini settings.

• ChatGPT: Profile → Settings → Data controls → Export data
• Claude: Profile → Settings → Privacy → Export data

Google limits uploads to 5 GB per file and 5 zip files per day. Processing can take up to a day. Images and files generated in previous apps are not included — text of chats only. Project files cannot be imported.

Limits you should know before you start

• Regions: Not available in the EEA, Switzerland, or United Kingdom.
• Accounts: Personal Google accounts only — not work, school, or supervised accounts. Age 18+ required.
• Surfaces: Not available in Gemini in Google Messages, Gemini in Chrome, or Gemini on Android XR.
• Re-upload: Adds new conversations but overwrites previously imported ones.

Gemini import vs Gemini's own memory

After import, Gemini's ongoing memory still depends on Personal Intelligence settings, the Memory toggle under that menu, and whether Keep Activity is enabled. Memory from past chats is not available in Gems or Live chats.

Imported data is saved in your Gemini Apps Activity and, when activity is on, may be used to improve Google's services including model training — per Google's privacy documentation.

When import isn't the right tool

Import helps if you are switching to Geminiand want a head start inside Google's ecosystem. It does not solve the cross-AI problem: your context still lives inside a vendor, summarized by that vendor's model, with no plain-text record you wrote and can audit line by line.
